Kiln training workshop – 30 January 2027

This in-person kiln training workshop in South London is a structured course that will help participants learn how to use pottery kilns safely and with confidence. Workshop participants are expected to have some experience in pottery/ceramics making and will be able to to deepen their technical knowledge and understanding of the ceramics process, ready to take what they learn further into practice upon completion. It is also an opportunity to explore the use of materials in ceramics practice with a focus on firings, sustainability, and long-term success in running one’s own electric kiln.

We welcome participants who are new to electric kilns, and want to have more confidence using them. If you are looking to acquire your own kiln, or will be running kiln for a school or a studio, you will find practical and theoretical sides of the workshop useful and a good preparation to starting out. We designed the workshop to be a comprehensive overview for a new electric kiln user and a good foundation for a long term practice.

Kiln training session will cover:

• The process of pottery kiln packing/unpacking.
• Electric kiln programming: use of contemporary kiln controllers.
• Firing temperatures and schedules.
• Timing and planning.
• Taking care of your kiln.
• Kiln fumes and health and safety for kiln installation.
• Personal protective equipment.
• Loading of a small Rhode top loader kiln.
• Deciding firing temperatures for ceramics materials.
• Top tips for best practice from a technician with 10+ years of experience

Please note:

• Do avoid wearing open toe shoes at this workshop to avoid injury.
• We will not be firing work in this session, so if you are looking to get your work fired, we are happy to help with our tailored Pottery Firing Service.
• We are happy to support attendees by issuing a certificates of attendance if requested at no extra charge.

Timing:

• The workshop is planned to run from 2:30pm till 5:30-5:45pm, with a small break in the middle.

Location:

The Kiln Training will be run from our pottery studio in Deptford, South London, a short walk from New Cross and Deptford stations and easily reachable from Greenwich.
