  • Co-operate | A film to celebrate #coopdifference

Our team are so pleased to be featured in this co-operative film. Have a look, you will love it.

  • A Silent Transformation film screening

Join us for one of the first screenings of A Silent Transformation film in London that we are co-hosting with a local housing.  This screening is a part of Cooperative Fortnight, celebration of co-operative difference.

A Silent Transformation is a film about the transformative power of the co-operative model.

The co-operative movement was built by people who took on the responsibility for their collective well-being in the face of government neglect, economic exclusion and cultural discrimination.
As the modern economy increasingly denies vast sectors of the population basic amenities for decent life, this co-operative spirit is as critical as ever. However, over the years the co-op sector has become insular and poorly understood.

The film sets out to explore the innovative self-help efforts of diverse communities across the Province of Ontario. By addressing their needs collectively they are helping to regain the radical vision of co-operation.
In these communities are the seeds of economic democracy, global solidarity, and a new popular movement to transform society.

The license for this screening had been kindly provided by Co-operatives UK, the regional cooperative body for the UK. The screening is co-organised by Sanford Housing Co-Op and Ceramics Studio Co-op.

Address: House 0, Sanford Housing Co-op, New Cross, London SE14 6NB

Throwing on Potter’s Wheel and Glazing course is back and open for bookings

It is a 5-session evening course run over June and July, that will give beginners the start in throwing technique. It will allow throwers will some experience to significantly improve their skills. During these sessions participants will be able learn how to make pots on potter’s wheel and will create wonderful pieces of functional pottery as a result. Students will be able to work on potter’s wheel, learn slip decoration and turning. Last session of the course will be focused on how to glaze pottery and prepare glazed work for the kiln.

We will aim to make about 5 ceramic pieces – bowls, mugs and pots that will be functional and nice to use. Pieces made during the class will be ready for collection a week after the final session.

  • Sandra Lane – Copeland Gallery

There are few more days to see this lovely show in Copeland Park in Peckham.

One of the current studio members Sandra Lane had been working towards it  for the last several month.

Our team were very pleased to join the opening yesterday, and see pieces we have helped to produce in action. It is always exciting for us to see how artists use ceramics alongside other techniques, and Sandra’s work is a really joyful example of it.

  • People’s Pottery Class – Student Projects

Here are some results from People’s Pottery Class, our regular evening and weekend pottery workshops. Most of the pieces here were made in the winter term this year. There is a bunch of plates made with hump moulds and few pieces thrown on potter’s wheel, examples of slip decoration and marbling.

We like to work with glaze, and encourage participants to experiment with form and decoration. One can see that with time  projects become more experimental and confident. Some works in the gallery were made by students who have been attending a class regularly for several years, others were made by students taking up pottery first time by joining our 12- week course. This small selection of pieces is here to give you an idea of what can be made in our studio during our regular classes.

We are excited to see what will summer term students come up with, follow us for the updates!

More information about our regular classes are on People’s Pottery Class page.

  • Telegraph Hill Festival

Recent artwork and pottery by your ceramics educators and kiln ladies

As a part of Telegraph Hill Festival Open Studios Anna Baskakova, Lenka Kalafutova, and Tatiana Baskakova will present a small garden exhibition bringing together their recent pieces focusing on the exploration of body and ceramics as a medium.

Lenka Kalafutova will show several mural pieces from Bleach me, a collaborative project with poet Adae and graphic designer Dusan Kacan, which stems from a personal desire to understand the experiences of queer persons and people of colour in different cultural contexts. Murals focusing on whiteness as a commercial ideal and erasure of identity came about as a part of this conversation.

Anna Baskakova’s work have been reflecting on the fragility of body, and human resilience despite existing in the context of societal oppression and gendered relations. She works combining clays and colour slips to create pieces that explore material tension and illusions of delicacy.

Tatiana Baskakova’s recent work continues on-going experiential research into materiality of the body and culture of community boxing. Artist’s body and ceramics sculpture are the dominant mediums to continue investigating matters of embodiment, gender and violence in sport. She will show new skipping rope pieces and performance work.

Most recent handmade ceramic wares made by Ceramics Studio Co-op members will be available for sale.
