  • Bowls for Books: studio library

    IMG_7140-1

Bowls for Books is a new co-operative member’s initiative though which we aim to  fundraise for common-use library in the ceramics studios.

Though nearly a year of being here at Juno Way we discovered that our commitment to running space, covering its costs, price of labour, having equipment in working condition, means we struggle to put aside funds for educational matters. Books are especially difficult. We know how valuable they would be for our students, members, key holder artists who work from the studio, open-access users.

Bowls for books is a radical measure to ensure we would be able to grow our library and knowledge base in the nearest future. We will distribute* new set of hand-made bowls though this website, and special one-off hand-made thrown planters directly from a shelf in our Juno Way studio. This way we plan to raise funds to add most desired books to the in-studio library, which all visitors would be welcome to refer to.

Examples of books we will acquire first:

    Linda Bloomfield, Advanced Pottery, 2011

Claudia Clare, Subversive Ceramics, December 2015

Edmund De Waal, 20th Century Ceramics (World of Art)

Edmund De Waal, Bernard Leach (British Artists Series), Tate, 2013

    Bernard Leach, Potter’s Book, 1976

Emmanual Cooper, Lucie Rie, Modernist Potter, 2012

    Emmanual Cooper, Contemporary Ceramics, 2009

Sasha Wardell, Slipcasting, A & C Black Publishers Ltd, 2007

Pottery, Politics, Art: George Ohr and the Brothers Kirkpatrick, University of Illinois Press, 2007

Karl Polanyi, The Great Transformation: The Political and Economic Origins of Our Time, 2002

Vasilis Kostakis, Michel Bauwens, Network Society and Future Scenarios for a Collaborative Economy, 2014

    STIR Magazine subscription for 2015-16

Radical Routes, Footprint worker co-operative and others, How to setup worker co-operatives, 2012

*We plan to sell bowls, but we also welcome non-monetary exchange. If you would like to donate books, or exchange books you have for bowls, please drop us a line with a proposed deal. Thank you.

  • How can you help us?

    How can you help us?

How you could help our innovational cooperative studios

We have been running  our ceramics coop studio for 5 month from our new premises at New Cross, and managed to make substantial first steps in making our dream of a professional collective ceramics studio come to live. There are currently 8 inspiring makers working in the studios. There is a growing demand for our classes and services. We have started carrying out commissions for bespoke ceramics and our Open Studios event on December was very well attended! Thank you for buying all little presents from us, and inspiring makers in the studios to do more and go further with their practice.

Here are few things that could help us to grow a professional ceramics studio and a better cooperative:

    – If you have a friend or acquaintance who may be interested in having a space for their ceramics practice in South London, please let them know about us. We are an affordable studio with good values where young up and coming ceramicists can gain access to equipment allowing to produce their work.

    – If you know South East London based ceramicists, they may be interested in firing service we provide. Kilns are not always easy to access. Please let them know about us.

    – If you have a friend who would like to join our  People’s Pottery classes, please send them a link to our website. We have spaces at short classes available for booking from February!

    – If you know someone who can donate us old or unneeded equipment to improve our ceramics facility, please let them know it would help our good cause in bringing this ceramics studio to higher professional standards.

    – If you are a funding body or individual interested in supporting crafts in Britain,  and helping innovational makers gain access professional facilities please get in touch with us. We  aim to build economically sustainable enterprise, but since it is the start we would appreciate your help in supporting ceramics artists working in London by funding new equipment and specialised artist projects and exhibitions.

We are very grateful for all help and inspirations in making this ethical studios come to live. Thank you all.

    Anna and Tatiana.
